Cecilia Alarcón, Chilean wine ambassador in Italy, tells us how it was, and why, that Quillón is already the art of the international network of wine cities.
We are proud, the commune of Quillón joins the "National Association of Wine Cities". This milestone of great relevance for Quillón, the Itata Valley and the Ñuble region, – makes Quillón the first Chilean municipality to be part of this distinguished international network of wine cities through the National Association of Città del Vino. An important step that will strengthen the local wine identity, where Quillón will play a strategic role in the management of the territory, creating alliances with all actors to promote culture, wine heritage, its wines and wine tourism.

The ceremony of adhesion of the commune of Quillón to the National Association of Città del Vino, was held before the fires, within the framework of the Wine Contest "Wine Awards of the Commune of Quillón", held between January 16-17-18 – 2026; and was attended by the president of the Città del Vino Association, Ángelo Radica, and local and regional government authorities, represented by the mayor of Quillón, Mr. Felipe Catalán, the Regional Governor of Ñuble, Mr. Oscar Crisóstomo, directors of CODESSER, PROCHILE, SERNATUR, officials of the commune of Quillón, businessmen, producers, jurors, among others.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATING STRATEGIC ALLIANCES
Undoubtedly, Quillón projects itself internationally, by implementing concrete actions and linking with hundreds of wine cities in Italy and Europe, which share the commitment to the sustainable development of their communities through governance, promotion of viticulture, wine tourism and the enhancement of their local and food and wine traditions.
In addition, it represents a recognition of the growing wine potential of the Itata Valley, wine tourism and the commitment of the Quillón commune, wine producers and liquor producers, the tourism sector to make Quillón visible and promoted, and the Itata Valley to Europe, through Città del Vino.
THE UNION OF QUILLON WITH CITTÀ DEL VINO
From the point of view of the internationalization of Città del Vino, the accession of foreign communes offers great opportunities and strengthens the Italian network, with an increasingly global perspective and initiates collaborative initiatives between communes, regions, and countries.
From this perspective, we played a fundamental role in initiating the negotiations for the union between the two institutions: Susana Villegas, as a counterpart in Chile, and I as an ambassador for Città del Vino.
It should be noted that the union of Quillón with Città del vino will strengthen the international projection of the commune of Quillón, its wines, wine tourism and the Itata Valley in Italy and Europe. In addition, it will allow the development of associative projects, exchanges of experiences, know-how, integrating policies of good practices, valuing the wine-growing territories and their wines, promoting innovation, sustainability, and wine tourism.

WHAT IS CITTÀ DEL VINO?
The National Association of Città del Vino, an Italian organization, was founded in Siena in 1987. It is a network that currently brings together 520 communes throughout Italy, it is made up of 6 foreign communes, and is part of RECEVIN (European Network of Wine Cities), which has 800 communes throughout Europe.
It represents communes with a significant winemaking identity, and where their territories have at least one of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).
Città del vino works with the aim of enhancing the winemaking heritage through the promotion of valleys, regions, and represents an ideal route through towns and cities that safeguard traditions, history, food and wine culture.
At the institutional level, it collaborates in projects to promote sustainable development, where the public administration plays a primary role, in the protection of the landscape and land use, the promotion of wine production, its wines and native grape varieties. It also works with regional and national institutions to promote initiatives and regulations that support viticulture, wine and wine tourism.
We are living in difficult times, marked by a deep crisis in the wine sector worldwide, we need to diversify, and wine tourism is presented as a strategic axis for the development of innovative tourism offers, creating tourist destinations with an important impact on territories or regions with a strong wine identity. I think that this type of strategic alliances, the internationalization of the wine sector, governance and good practices, as well as associativity, are key to the development of their communes and territories.
WELCOME! WE INVITE OTHER COMMUNES IN CHILE TO BE PART OF THE CITTÀ DEL VINO!
Joining the National Association of Wine Cities is a special invitation to all mayors and communes, to promote their communes, wine culture, sustainable development and wine tourism.
In this sense, being part of Città del vino represents the union and strength of wine cities, a strategic networking tool to create alliances, promote territories, fostering opportunities for collaboration and dissemination of the culture of wine, gastronomy and wine tourism.
The network of communes offers its members the opportunity to stand out as excellent wine tourism destinations, promoting their local products and creating a solid territorial identity. Likewise, consolidating this union with Città del Vino, through articulated work with local and regional institutions, and of great international projection, will allow future collaborations and exchanges to be strengthened, for the visibility of the communes in Italy-Europe.
The advantages and motivations to be part of the Città del Vino are innumerable, however, we can highlight the following:
1.- Città del Vino represents: the union of communes that work in the defense and enhancement of the territories and wine-growing landscapes, their wines and native vines.
2.- It creates synergies between municipalities, institutions, producers and/or trade associations, and local actors in the wine and wine tourism sector.
3.– It provides a common platform to exchange experiences, contacts and strengthen associative work.
4.- It offers concrete management and governance instruments, good practices, sustainability, legislation, agreements and partnerships, education and training (wine tourism), research and concrete studies, for the promotion of wines and wine-growing territories.
5.- Local development, through collaboration to promote the wine-growing landscape, wine culture and food and wine.
6.- Proposals for the promotion of vineyards, their wines and territories; with sponsorship and collective branding of Città del Vino.
7.- Communication and visibility at national and international level of the territory, communes, associations, producers, wines, events, etc. through Città del Vino in Italy-Europe, and in Chile.
