Wine consumption in Greece recovers, up 39.94% in 2021/2022 compared to 2020/2021.
Wine consumption in Greece "returned" to normal levels in the 2021/2022 wine season (period from 1/8/2021 to 31/7/2022), since according to the processing of the wine balance data by KEOSOE, wine consumption for this period is recorded at 2,803 thousand hl.
Wine consumption in 2021/2022 shows an increase of 39.94% compared to the previous period 2020/2021 (2,003 thousand hl), a period in which the impact of the covid 19 pandemic was decisive for the second consecutive year.
Given the negative impact of the pandemic, wine consumption in 2021/2022 shows an increase of 65.32% compared to the average of the previous 5 years and 28.16% compared to the average of the previous 10 years.
The level of annual human consumption is derived from the algebraic calculation of the wine balance data, and in particular from the beginning-of-period stocks, the production produced, imports, deducted wine exports, as well as industrial uses, distillations and the deduction of end-of-period stocks.
In terms of the absolute level of consumption, per capita consumption in our country is estimated at 26.70 litres per capita, which is slightly above the EU average wine consumption (23 litres per capita).
The following table shows Greece's wine balance over time and the resulting table of wine consumption over time.
