Embassy of Georgia honoured to invite you on Friday, 30 January, at 19:00 to a public lecture by the well-known Georgian television presenter and Professor of Ethnomusicology Dr George (Gia) Bagashvili, entitled “The International Significance of Georgian Polyphonic Music” (in English, with Greek interpretation)*.

The event will feature:

  • The Musical Ensemble of the Cultural Centre “Caucasus”

  • The renowned Georgian singer Dodona (Finalist in the Greek TV show “The Voice of Greece 2023”)

The event will take place at the Cultural Centre of Webster University, Plaka
(5 Markou Aurelio Street, GR-105 56).

Professional Summary
Dr George (Gia) Bagashvili is one of Georgia’s most distinguished ethnomusicologists, widely recognised for his scholarship on Georgian polyphony and traditional folklore. With more than three decades of experience in academia, performance and cultural preservation, he has shaped public understanding of Georgian music both in Georgia and internationally.

As a professor, cultural advocate and creative director, Dr Bagashvili has lectured at world-renowned institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, Columbia and the Sibelius Academy. His dynamic lectures, enriched with archival photographs, video and audio material, engage both professional musicians and general audiences alike.

Beyond academia, he is the creative force behind numerous high-profile musical productions and popular television and radio programmes that have introduced Georgian folklore to millions. His career reflects a rare combination of rigorous scholarship, creative innovation and dedicated cultural service.

* In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), at the 32nd session of its General Conference, adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
