Greece, with its rich history and unique traditions, is known for its fine spirits that capture the essence of Greek culture. From crystal-clear tsipouro and aromatic ouzo to sweet mastic liqueur, Greek spirits are part of our gastronomic heritage.
The Art of Distillation
The tradition of distillation in Greece has roots that go back centuries. From the 14th century onwards, it was the work of monks. Later, the idea of using the remains of wine production to produce an alcoholic beverage was passed on to winegrowers. This is how tsipouro, the drink of winegrowers, was created.
Production methods evolved and, in 1988, a legal framework was established that defines the conditions for the production and bottling of tsipouro by organized units that meet the necessary specifications, as provided for by the relevant national and Community provisions. In recent years, protected designations of origin have also been established for beverages from specific regions, such as Tsipouro of Thessaly, Tsipouro of Macedonia, Tsipouro of Tyrnavos, and Tsikoudia of Crete.
The Distillates of Greece
• Tsipouro: Tsipouro, or Tsikoudia of Crete, produced mainly from the distillation of high-quality grape marc, is one of the most characteristic distillates of our country. With or without aniseed, tsipouro is the perfect accompaniment to meze and friendly gatherings.
• Ouzo: Known for its characteristic aniseed flavor, ouzo is perhaps the most popular Greek drink internationally. It is served with ice and water, creating the classic milky color that makes it recognizable.
• Mastic Liqueur: Made from Chios mastic, this liqueur offers unique aromas and exceptional sweetness, ideal for desserts or refreshing cocktails.
• Grape Distillates: This is the most refined and popular distillate in Greece, as it is produced from the whole grape and exudes the aromatic characteristics of varieties such as Muscat and Muscatel. From Crete to Macedonia, local spirits are symbols of hospitality and tradition.
• Metaxa This is the best-known Greek drink internationally. We would say it is in a class of its own. In a future article, we will tell you about its unique historical identity.

• Cultural Significance
Greek spirits are not just drinks. They are intertwined with celebrations, family moments, and local customs. In addition, many of them have been internationally recognized for their quality, contributing to the promotion of Greece as a country with a rich gastronomic culture.
• The Future of Greek Spirits
Today, Greek producers combine traditional methods with modern technologies, creating high-quality products that are conquering international markets. By highlighting their local character and authenticity, Greek spirits are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. The actions of SEΑΟP, the Association of Greek Producers of Spirits and Alcoholic Beverages, contribute decisively to this sector.
Greek spirits are experiences that carry the taste of Greece. Whether you enjoy a glass of tsipouro under the summer sun or a mastic liqueur after dinner, every sip is a journey into the heart of Greek tradition.
